The Eco-Friendly Committee at Trinity Academy Halifax is celebrating a monumental achievement after winning a £5,000 grant to bring their innovative environmental projects to life. The committee participated in the Earthshot competition that culminated in a nerve-racking three-month wait before receiving the exciting news.
The competition journey began with a visit to Hanson Plywood Ltd, where the students said ‘Our visit was welcoming and friendly, with everything thoughtfully organized for our arrival. One key takeaway was learning that cutting down trees isn’t necessarily negative when done responsibly. Your efforts demonstrated how such actions can contribute to positive environmental impacts.’
They then ventured to the White Rose offices in Leeds, where the students pitched their ideas to a panel of judges; and participated in a podcast, sharing their vision for a greener, healthier future with the wider community.
Placing third out of numerous entries, the committee’s success is a testament to their hard work. The prize money will fund transformative projects, including the construction of a greenhouse, an ecological survey to boost biodiversity. They also hope to create an ‘Earthshot’ classroom, when future funds allow. These initiatives aim to foster sustainability, enhance learning experiences, and inspire environmental stewardship within the school and beyond.
The Trinity Academy Halifax community eagerly anticipates the implementation of these initiatives, which promise to leave a lasting impact on both the environment and the students who will benefit from these unique learning opportunities.
