On Friday the 26th of January 2018, three members of staff from Hanson Plywood attended a careers afternoon event at Norristhorpe Junior & Infant School in Liversedge, West Yorkshire. Attendees from Hanson Plywood included:

With members of staff from different departments, we were able to give more of an insight into working life and responsibilities here at Hanson Plywood. The afternoon was organised to provide children ages 7-11 with a greater understanding of the potential future career paths that are available to them, and provide the message that with hard work and perseverance, their preferred career choice is well within their reach.
Our staff were placed in an ICT suite at the school and three different groups of children sat in for 30-minute sessions. In these sessions, different topics were discussed to help the children understand and prepare for any future career choices. Topics included:
These topics certainly interested the children as an array of questions were asked after each session. It became apparent that the children were very passionate about their futures and understood the amount of hard work required in order for them to achieve their desired careers.
It was a pleasure to be invited to this event by the staff at Norristhorpe and we hope to see these bright, intelligent and creative children knocking on our door in 10+ years with a job application!

As many of you know our new website went live this week!
The task has been enormous not only for us here at Hanson Plywood but for our Co-designers: Identify Web Design and Prime Creative.
The whole process of designing and creating the website has taken the better part of half a year and we are proud of the end result.

Our 2018 version of the Hanson Plywood Product Guide includes indicative pricing guidelines for all of our stocked products along with informational content to assist with specification. The annual product guide now includes additional technical information on Birch Plywood and detailed advice on fire rating and relevant standards. Hanson Plywood is sponsoring the ‘Urban Buzz’ Trada University Challenge Design competition in February 2018. The Competition is based on the innovate design techniques delivered by third year University Students across the UK. The Trada competition has always been a major success with excellent feedback from students, judges and sponsors.
The focal point this year is on third year University students of architecture, engineering and landscape architecture related courses. Students will be divided into twelve teams of five, including 2 architects, 2 engineers and 1 landscape architect. The competition lasts 2 days from the 23rd to the 24th of February 2018.
The project this year is to encourage the students to theorise ways in which timber can be used to create a timber multi-storey car park. Timber design professionals from all over the world will be on hand to give advice to the teams on their projects. The car park also needs to cater to the transitions of hybrid and electric cars in the future.
We at Hanson always look forward to events like these as its important to encourage innovative/creative thinking at a young age. We look forward to the event and wish all the students good luck with their designs.

Hanson Plywood Ltd again supported Timber Expo at the national exhibition centre in Birmingham on the 10th-12th of October this year.
Timber Expo is a long running exhibition event which is dedicated to the timber trade, allowing companies inside and outside of the United Kingdom to promote and exhibit their products. The show also covers a wide range of timber applications from timber frame, engineered timber products, cladding, decking, fixings and fastenings, floors and windows. coatings, mouldings, flooring and much more.
Alongside our own stand, we were also proud to sponsor students of AA EM Tech’s in their entwined sculpture project. Our sales team were on hand to help with any queries or information members of the public had at the event.
The annual event is a great opportunity for Hanson Plywood to interact with architects and specifiers and our team are always eager to attend. We will be displaying in 2018, so keep checking our website for updates on next years Timber expo.
Hanson Plywood Ltd proudly sponsored the ‘Scalerule’: next generation design Birmingham project which was developed and designed by GCSE students who show an impressive amount of knowledge and promise in the engineering and architectural world.
As a part of the project the students were asked to design a pavilion which would promote ‘social interaction’ in Birmingham city centre. The project included 35 students from 7 different schools who split into 9 teams and participated in seminars, design/drawing classes and presentations. Each individual project was judged by a panel of four judges with experience in the architectural/engineering world.
The winning group named as ‘The Bar-Bara’ designed a sculpture which created an enclosed space that could be entered from a number of locations. The development process of creating and constructing the pavilion involved an array of modern technological processes, for example rapid prototyping which enabled the whole team to appreciate the pavilion in three dimensions. Virtual reality was also used so the students could visualise the project at its completion stage before construction began.
After weeks of preparation which involved multiple prototypes and construction sequences, the pavilion was finally built and the result was greatly satisfying for all of us at Hanson Plywood. We enjoy sponsoring young, aspiring architects and designers as it encourages and promotes innovative/creative thinking at an early age. Congratulations to all of the students who were involved in the project and a special congratulations to the winning team ‘Bar-Bara’.

As part of our commitment to the WWF’s Forest campaign, we have agreed to make our responsible purchasing performance public. In 2014, 77.39% of our products came from FSC® & PEFC Certified sources. Following receipt of these figures, we set a target to reach 80% 3rd party certified products for 2015.
In 2015, we have surpassed this target and sourced 82.6% of our timber from FSC & PEFC Certified. As a result of the improvement in our sourcing and the performance and commitment of our Purchasing Department, we have set a target of 87% for 2016.
As one of the largest importers of timber in Europe, the UK plays an important role in influencing the markets. Ensuring the sustainability of forests ultimately ensures the sustainability of the industry. To this end, Hanson Plywood are proud to support the WWF’s Forest Campaign. We strongly encourage others to support this campaign and the WWF’s objective.

As of November 2015, Hanson Plywood have pledged support to the WWF’s Forest Campaign along with over 50 other leading businesses in the UK and two major trade associations.
The WWF’s Forest Campaign aims to eradicate the trade in illegal and unsustainable timber by working to influence key governmental decision-makers at UK and EU level in order to ensure companies dedicated to responsible forest trade can operate on an even playing field.
