Urban Buzz design challenge

On Friday the 23rd of February, two members of staff from Hanson Plywood attended the Trada Urban Buzz Student Design Challenge at the University of Sheffield.

We were one of the proud sponsors of the event which took place in the Diamond building . The Diamond is a wonderfully constructed building and reflected the University’s keen interest in architecture.

The Challenge

The event was designed by Trada to encourage undergraduate students to put their architectural and engineering skills into practice. The challenge was for the students to design a timber multi-story car-park. 12 teams were entered into the competition and each team was a mixture of over 60 students from 28 Universities across the UK. Each team comprised of a multidisciplinary group of young student architects and engineers with the end goal to impress the judges with the design process and final design itself.

The challenge took place over the course of two days (23rd February/24th February) and had a clear and concise time-table designed by Trada which consisted of presentations given by the judges regarding their expertise on the project, a smaller competition/ice breaker for the students to get to know their team members and finally, design time for the 12 teams of students.

Hanson Plywood sent members of staff from the marketing and sales departments to take part in the event.  Both members of our staff thoroughly enjoyed the competition and had nothing but positive feedback after returning from Sheffield.

Winning team

Team six came first beating eleven teams to the prize money of £2000.00 for their innovative design of a multi-story car park. The winning team (team 6) included five members all from different Universities across the UK:

Engineers

  • Edward Shaw- University of Sheffield
  • Will Evans- Coventry University

Architects

  • Katy Horner- Edinburgh Napier University
  • Jure Zibret- Leicester School of Architecture

Landscape Architect

  • Wing Lam Lo- University of Sheffield

Teams 11 and 12 were highly commended also scooping some prize money for their designs.

We’d like to thank Trada for inviting us to be involved in such an inspiring event. Well done to all the students who took part in the competition and congratulations to the winning team for their creative design of a timber multi-story car park.
